Austrian Cultural Forum Jazz Festival

Austrian Cultural Forum New York , New York City, NY

FULSOME Wolfgang Puschnig, saxophone Jamaladeen Tacuma, bass Reinhardt Winkler, drums During the week of October 19 – 23, a new generation of Austrian jazz musicians will enter the New York scene. The Austrian Cultural Forum and Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club combine forces to present Austria’s best young artists to a New York audience on five consecutive nights. On Tuesday night the Austrian Cultural Forum New York presents one of Austria’s biggest jazz musicians Wolfgang Puschnig performing with the electric bassist Jamaladeen Tacuma and drummer Reinhardt Winkler. Wolfgang Puschnig Born in 1956 in Klagenfurt, Carinthia, alto saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig is one of the founding members of the Vienna Art Orchestra. His music conveys a cosmopolitan attitude and also bares his regional roots with strong stylistic influences from Germanic, Slavic and Romanic cultures, traditions, and languages. From the early 1980s onward, this trademark has made him an A-list player in the world of European jazz. In addition to the Vienna Art Orchestra, he has been collaborating regularly for many years with various formations, including Big Band de Carla Bley, the band Red Sun (which unites him with Samul Nori on Korean drums) and singer Linda Sharrock as well as violinist Mark Feldman. “Is Wolfgang Puschnig Austria's biggest Jazz musician since Joes Zawinul? His new album removes any doubt.” – Profil Jamaaladeen Tacuma Since his emergence with Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time in the mid-'70s, Philadelphia-born Jamaaladeen Tacuma has been one of the top electric bassists in a style of music that could be called “free funk.” In 1975, then 19 year-old Tacuma joined Coleman, and his ability to combine funky rhythms with free jazz helped give Prime Time its distinctive sound. Tacuma’s work with Prime Time landed him his most high-profile gig to date: an appearance with the band on Saturday Night Live in 1979, which Tacuma later cited in Musician Magazine as his “best live performance ever.” Work with such artists as James “Blood” Ulmer, Walt Dickerson, David Moss, Chuck Hammer, Kip Hanrahan, Charles Earland, and David Murray has further added to his reputation. Tacuma's solo career has also been extensive. His recordings include duet albums with Austrian saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig (Pieces of the Dream and Roots & Fruits) and Ernst Jandl (Mixed Metaphors)
