Musical message in a bottle

If you look closely, the moers festival is celebrating a double birthday: the 50th festival will take place in 2021, but the 50th birthday will not be until 2022, after all, Burkhard Hennen organized the very first “jazz” (as some Moerser still say today) in the legendary castle courtyard 1972. Since the festival never canceled despite numerous extremely difficult situations, we can now celebrate this unique situation properly! In the 50 weeks between Festival 2021 and Festival 2022, we receive a musical greeting every week from an artist who has played a decisive role in shaping the moers festival's DNA. Be it through frequent presence or through the one that is still legendary today ...

Tacuma (born 1956, Hempstead NY), is celebrated in internationally for his creatively free and funky approach to the electric bass. At the age of 19 his innovative style caught Ornette Coleman's ear, and he became the first bassist in Coleman's electric band, Prime Time, touring and recording with the group throughout the 1970's and 80's. Viewed as one of the most distinctive bassists of his generation, he is credited for redefining the potential of the instrument. Tacuma debuted as a bandleader, composer, and arranger in 1983 with the album Showstopper, going on to develop compositions that blend Prime Time's elaborate harmonies with engaging melodies. His 1988 album Jukebox was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989; in 2011 his ongoing achievements were recognized by the award of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

Valuing adaptability, adventure, and dynamism, Tacuma's ever-shifting aesthetic is evident in his wide range of projects and collaborators over the years, from fronting the funk trio Cosmetic to co-leading ensembles with US and European colleagues such as Vernon Reid and Derek Bailey, as well as recording with James Blood Ulmer, Nona Hendryx, Mark Ribot, and many, many others.

Since 2015, Tacuma has been producing the annual Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival in his hometown of Philadelphia, providing a platform for renowned as well as up-and-coming local artists. He is a recipient of the 2018 Benny Golson Award from the City of Philadelphia.

With his free funk approach, his tight and deep attack, his highly syncopated playing, the bass wizard gives a "groove" (or rather a "swing") to music that takes it way beyond. Together with Daryl Burgee, a creative and multi-talented drummer, and Ronny Drayton on guitar, he lays the foundation of an exemplary rock/funk power trio. Wadud Ahmad, fourth member of this musical brotherhood, is a poet acclaimed by Sonia Sanchez as well as The Roots (listen to their "Raising Down" opus). His socially conscious spoken word does perfectly fit the trio's open-mindedness that will take us to a world where rock, free, funk and hip-hop happily coexist with a very special guest Abiodun Oyewole founding memeber of The Last Poets will take this over the top with his blistering politically charged raps leaving the audience with something to think about and ready to resist.

“To experience Freedom, Justice and Equality is the divine right of every human being on the planet earth. That right has no color bounds and the pursuit of those qualities is an action that requires no excuse . Freedom in music is a human experience that transcends all boundaries and is a natural action of resistance.

My art through music has been an ongoing task to outwardly bring positive and uplifting audio experiences to the masses. My personal goal of striving to attain moral excellence has allowed me to see clearly through negative responses and behaviors. The existing state of inequality, and all of the negative social injustices that are being implemented in this world makes it possible for me through my art to shout out, bring to the forefront the ongoing struggle in hopes to make what is wrong right." - Jamaaladeen Tacuma

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival 2017 - April 30, 2017
Philly Celebrates Jazz and International Jazz Day with renowned bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and friends at the Philadelphia International House Ibrahim Theater

Philadelphia, PA – Internationally renowned bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma is pleased to present The Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival for the third year in a row, a celebration of creative, progressive improvised music. The concert takes place on International Jazz Day, Saturday, April 30, 2017 from 7pm — 11pm at The International House, 3701 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA . Admission is $25 for Adults and $15 for students with I.D.
Organic Soul Food Catering by Abu The Juiceman.

The 2016 Festival brought together people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities for an evening celebrating Philadelphia's rich musical tapestry—the event was sold out with a waiting list to get in. Whereas last year’s theme was the programming together of “old heads” with the up-and-coming young firebrands of the Philly scene, this year the emphasis is on new connections overall. Audiences will be treated to sets performed by stellar musicians in exciting new combinations curated by Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Tacuma brings his insight and long history as an internationally touring creative composer and improviser to bear on assembling these premiere configurations.

Tacuma notes that in recent years, Jazz festivals around the world are becoming increasingly conservative. Festivals now demand artists whose ensembles and compositions have a proven track record of positive reviews, resulting in commercialized and diluted programming that becomes ubiquitous and overly familiar. The 2017 Outsiders Festival aims to bring back the adventurous and experimental spirit that was once more encouraged.

With this idea of promoting vibrant, healthy, risk-taking freedom of expression, Tacuma has selected a lineup that includes saxophonist David Murray, multi-instrumentalist and composer Kahil El Zabar, trombonist Craig Harris, the Nick Millevoi Quartet, Harriet Tubman Trio, guitarist Chuck Hammer, pianist Yoichi Uzeki, Electronic Sound Scapes Producer Moshe Black, and many more.

Complete Lineup:

David Murray, Kahil EL Zabar, Craig Harris, Chuck Hammer, Jamie Saft, Nick Millevoi Quartet - Matt Engle, Brian Marsella, Harriet Tubman - JT Lewis, Brandon Ross, Melvin Gibbs, Keir Neuringer, Yoichi Uzeki, David Fishkin, Moshe Black, Asimina Chremos, Brad Forbes, Tim Hutson, iNFiNiEN- Jordan Berger, Tom Cullen, Chrissie Loftus, Matt Hollenberg

This recording marks a milestone in my musical career carrying on the idea of bridging the musical gap culturally and preserving and celebrating Gnawa music and it's rich repertoire of ancient African song rhythm and dance.

This recording is the result of International music artist, producer, composer and electric bass guitarist Jamaaladeen Tacuma's collaboration with Morocco's up and coming Gnawa group Binat Gania. Guest artist includes Gnawa musician Samir Langus on sintir and vocals, DJ King Britt on soundscapes, guitarist Herve Samb and Rick Iannacone, Wolfgang Pushing on Hojak, Ahmad Compaore on drums, Yoichi Uzeki on organ and Bob Wisdom on vocals. This combination of ancient African Gnawa traditional instrumentation and musical themes along with Jamaaladeen's sense of production in funk and groove mashes together a completely new sound fresh to the global listening audience. The music is powerful with emotion and intensity and for sure will bring the listening to their dancing feet. The recording is scheduled to be released at the end of March 2017. A musical relationship began in 2012, reflecting the diversity of experiences of musicians who are involved. Never as in this case the 'group' name is a program. Both Jamaaladeen Tacuma Greg Burk, Tony Arco or Marco Visconti Prasca have addressed the most diverse repertoires but always with that attitude of self-ironic and detached control that is synthesized from the word 'cool'. Whether addressing songs written from Tacuma musical mentor, the immense Ornette Coleman, whether it should launch improvisations that refer to 'free-funk' or recreate songs of John Coltrane, the one that marks the collaboration between Tacuma and Marco V.P. It is the attitude, the 'coolness', anyway. Jamaaladeen is honored to announce a new composition debut

During his highly public struggle with the city of Philadelphia to save his iconic studio from seizure under Eminient Domain, artist James E. Dupree developed over 400 pieces of artwork. Now, these pieces are brought together in the exhibition Stolen Dreams in the Promise Zone at Stockton University Art Garage in Atlantic City. Renown composer, bassist and producer Jamaaladeen Tacuma provides a powerful musical rendition of the installation titled The Black Picasso & Goliath– Breaking it All the Way Down. Each of The Black Picasso & Goliath's three movements reach deep into the total experience of Dupree's battle, resulting in a composition that conveys turmoil, passion and the triumphant result. Tacuma's composition will be performed live on Friday August 28 from 6PM-8PM, is free and to the public.

James E. Dupree is an accomplished artist, educator, and business owner. Raised in between Philly and Pittsburgh, Dupree lived as a child just a few blocks from his Haverford Ave. studio. Among the first black graduates of the University of Pennsylvania MFA program, and a recent recipient of the UPenn Black Alumni Society's Living Legend Award, he is in many ways an example of the success of Philadelphia’s art institutions in addressing the city’s underprivileged communities. He attended free classes at Fleisher Art Memorial as a child, he later received a full scholarship at Columbus College of Art and Design, and went on to prominence via graduate school at Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. Dupree’s works are in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and the Schomberg Museum in Copenhagen, as well as in private collections of the Dave Matthews Band and Patti LaBelle. He has been artist-in-residence at numerous cultural institutions including the National Museum of Wales and the Studio Museum of Harlem, and his sets for a Mummers Fancy Brigade club, the Shooting Stars, won them first place two years in a row and him the nickname of "King James". As an educator, he and his wife spent seven years running and teaching at the Community Voyage School for runaway children at 35th and Lancaster Ave., and Mr. Dupree also taught at the Prints in Progress after-school program at 3500 Lancaster in the CEC building. Dupree taught in higher education for many years at the University of the Arts and PAFA. Currently, in addition to the private instruction offered at Dupree Studios, you can take free figure painting classes with Dupree at Fleisher Art Memorial. Mr. Dupree has used his success as an artist to reinvest in the Philadelphia communities of his roots. There are many well-known examples of that investment, but one example that stands out is his studio in the Mantua neighborhood. His success is a product of the best Philadelphia art institutions, and he is an exemplary model of a Philadelphian investing back in his community. Part of his long term goals, his dream, has been to leave Dupree Studios as a pillar in the Mantua community. jamesdupree.com for his bio and more of his work. One of the few jazz-rock groups to ever feature a free contrapuntal approach to improvisation, Prime Time had as much in common with European composers of the Baroque period as anything else in the world of fusion. For this special night Danish drummer Kresten Osgood has assembled a dream team to celebrate the groundbreaking music of Prime Time. None other than original Prime Time member Jamaaladeen Tacuma will handle the electric bass.

LINEUP
Jamaaladeen Tacuma - el-bas
AC - el-bas Kresten Osgood - trommer
Anja Jacobsen - el-trommer

Jamaaladeen performs at Copenhagen Winter Jazz FestivalJamaaladeen Tacumatag:www.jamaaladeenmusic.com,2005:Post/34905002015-01-27T22:26:56-05:002020-09-02T15:36:21-04:00Jamaaladeen Tacuma's Legend Of The Pipe and Sweater Pre Order nowJamaaladeen is pleased to announce the release of his latest recording , Pre Order Ship Date 2/23/2015
Legend of The Pipe and Sweater

Recorded Live in in Denmark at Vallekilde Summer Session (after hours). Civitella provides an artist the complete environment to fully express their creativity and I am extremely honored to be here and amongst such talented individuals who came long distances to be at Civitella. I wanted to start off this process by producing this short film titled SNIFF SNIFF. An exploratory look into the pursuit of living in the now. The fascination of time and the idea of progressively moving forward. The acceptance of any given situation one finds himself in and the chilled out mood one aspires to maintain. As ideas come and go, one has to act on it to fully appreciate what life has to offer.Somehow it is crucial to move forward but to remain in a state of stillness. One has to Sniff Sniff and wake up and smell the Stargazer Lillies. As our surroundings are in constant movement, the question is are we? Even the birds sing in tune. Directed by and starring Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Shot on location in Italy at Civitella Ranieri in front of Jamaaladeens studio Granaio. This track "How Sensitive" is from the upcoming cd release Rendevous Suite on Jam ALL Productions label along with David Murray on Tenor sax and bass clarinet.

. --

Published on Jul 7, 2014

Civitella Ranieri. This was a blessing. We made the recording and she also performed it live with me in Washington at the famous Constitution Hall which African American singer Marian Anderson was denied because of her race. This was historical for me. Civitella Ranieri is for certain a place where any artist would be inspired to enhance their ongoing creativity and to find new ways of expressing their artistic desires. Peace, JamaaladeenJamaaladeen Tacumatag:www.jamaaladeenmusic.com,2005:Post/30483942014-06-30T12:13:28-04:002020-08-24T05:55:11-04:00Jamaaladeen At Civitella Ranieri Itlay Day 1

Jun 23, 2014

Hello Everyone, I am on board now starting my residency fellowship here in Italy at Civitella Ranieri. Denardo has gone on to record and produce many of Ornette’s recordings as well as collaborating extensively with the poet Jayne Cortez. The Coleman Group also includes bassists Tony Falanga and Al MacDowell, both members of Ornette’s current quartet. Over the years, Tacuma has collaborated with a diverse and talented roster of artists, including guitarists Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Marc Ribot, and James Blood Ulmer. He has also performed and recorded with saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Grover Washington, Jr., Odean Pope, and James Carter. While he coined the term “free jazz” with his classic 1960 double quartet album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation, he’s a composer of expansive ambition whose tunes have become essential touchstones in the jazz canon. His melodic imagination often seems limitless, as he regularly introduces dozens of new tunes with slippery, careening singsong lines. And though he’s known as one of the most sophisticated and controversial innovators in jazz, his music is equally steeped in the raw looseness of the blues.
